- Meet Alison... Founder of The Packhouse
A Labour of Love: In Conversation with Alison Hougham What begins as a simple idea can sometimes grow into something far greater. The Packhouse is now a destination known for its character and distinctive style, and we sat down with founder Alison Hougham to talk about how it all began. Pour yourself a coffee, settle in, and discover the story behind one of Farnham’s most cherished destinations. Alison, let’s start at the beginning. Do you come from a design background, or did your love of interiors evolve naturally over time? My journey hasn’t followed a traditional design path. I left school at 16 and tried everything from window cleaning to serving as a firefighter with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Those experiences shaped my determination and my love of connecting with people. So why The Packhouse? When did you first discover this magnificent 600-year-old building, and how was the idea born? The Packhouse grew from a lifelong passion for beautiful things and spaces with character. I wanted to create somewhere inspiring and welcoming, where people could discover unique pieces and bring warmth and personality into their homes. What began as an idea evolved into a business that reflects my love of interiors, creativity and community. Travel continues to inspire me, and The Packhouse is very much a reflection of that journey, a place filled with stories, style and discovery. Was there a moment when you realised it was going to be the success it is today, or did it grow more organically? It has always been a labour of love. I have poured my heart into creating warm, welcoming spaces filled with quirky, high-quality pieces, great service and memorable experiences. Its success has grown naturally over time as more people have discovered what is often decribed as a "hidden gem" in Farnham. The Palm House restaurant has become a real local favourite. Did opening two businesses side by side feel like a risk? It felt like a natural progression. The Packhouse is already a destination and people make a day of visiting. We had the space, and I wanted to create somewhere equally warm and inviting where people could enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch. The venue also works beautifully for events, with its cosy atmosphere and the ability to host over 120 guests. When it comes to interiors, do you have a favourite season for buying and styling? Every season brings its own energy, but Christmas has to be the most exciting time to bring the magic to The Packhouse. It really sparks creativity and transforms the space into the most incredible feast for the eyes. How would you describe your own home style, is it filled with treasured finds and stories? My home is very much a reflection of my life so far, layered with travel memories, interesting objects and natural textures collected over time. I have always loved spaces that feel relaxed and lived in rather than overly styled. That same feeling carries through to my other homes, which we share with guests as peaceful retreats. You can take a quiet peek at them here: https://www.treasured-retreats.com Have you ever considered a Packhouse design magazine full of inspiration and pieces people could shop as they read? It is a lovely idea, but because we carefully curate so many one off pieces, it would be difficult to keep up with how quickly the space evolves and changes. That constant movement is part of what makes The Packhouse so special. You never know what unique find you might discover from one visit to another. How important is visual merchandising, and do you have a strong team behind you? Visual merchandising is key to our success. The store evolves weekly, creating a real sense of surprise each time you visit. Our team, led by Jayne, is incredibly creative and passionate, and their dedication is a huge part of what makes The Packhouse so unique. With The Packhouse and The Palm House taking up so much of your time, how do you relax? They are at the heart of my life, but I always make time for sailing, hot air ballooning and travel whenever I can. Finally, if you could transport The Packhouse anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? It would have to be Cappadocia in Turkey. There is something truly magical about its fairy chimney rock formations, ancient cave dwellings and the hot air balloons rising at sunrise over an almost otherworldly landscape. My love of hot air ballooning makes it especially captivating, drifting quietly above it is unforgettable. "It is quirky, beautiful and full of character, perfectly, surrounded by stories, treasures and a real sense of discovery" Sounds exactly like a visit to the Packhouse with a delicious coffee thrown in to make it a perfect day out.

- Bringing the outdoors in: home décor inspired by nature
If you’re looking to refresh your home in 2025, greenery can add life to any interior space, and the more exotic it is the better. (Bamboo is one example of something that could be the perfect addition to your home, plus it’s airy and informal, letting light through its leaves.) So it’s no wonder that more of us are taking the concept of ‘bringing the outdoors in’ seriously. And designers are predicting the trend for interiors inspired by nature will continue throughout 2025. But it’s all about more than just having a few pot plants on the kitchen windowsill. Biophilic design means organic materials and indoor plants become the focus. The aim is to encourage mental wellbeing and strengthen our connection with nature via textures, plants and materials. Plants, after all, invariably enhance a room’s visual appeal, plus they can improve air quality. Go for ones with a strong shape and a distinctive structure. Most of us also want a home which is comfortable as well as visually appealing. Continue the natural theme with earthy, bold colour palettes teamed up with multi-functional spaces. At the same time, in 2025 high-end design won’t just be about style; it’ll be about making choices and decisions that are environmentally aware. And of course, there’s no reason why luxury and sustainability can’t go hand in hand. So you don’t have to limit your home to a minimalist or rustic look or compromise on sophistication. Expect to see plenty of reclaimed, composite and recycled materials plus sustainable fabrics, such as organic cotton, linen and bamboo, alongside gorgeously handcrafted and artisanal pieces this year. Meanwhile, for your colour palette think warm neutrals like ivory and brown, and organic, earthy or moody hues including terracotta and olive or forest green. Soft furnishings and wall art can add some subtle colour. Organic textures such as wool also enhance the look and feel of a space. Other ideas to bear in mind include using organic patterns and shapes where you can, inspired by nature, maximising natural light and optimising the flow between the interior and exterior worlds. You can do this, for example with sliding doors or by maintaining a good airflow. Nature-themed décor from The Packhouse At The Packhouse, we offer a distinctive shopping experience with dozens of local independent traders. We’re at Runfold, near Farnham, in the Surrey Hills, so we’re pretty close to a decent slice of the natural world ourselves. And our base is a centuries-old former hop kiln, a listed building, so that in itself is a nifty piece of recycling! We’re all for sustainability, encouraging our customers to bring their own shopping bags and share cars when they visit us. Independent traders also typically have a smaller carbon footprint than big retailers. What’s more, we love vintage items, repurposing and upcycling. And, of course, buy vintage and you won’t be supporting modern manufacturing processes which could involve harmful chemicals. So browse our scores of stores for a brilliant buy for your home inspired by nature. We sell everything from jewellery to antique furniture and more. The Packhouse is open daily – browse our website and give us a call ahead of your visit if you have any queries. Finally, once you’re here, combine your bargain-hunting with a break at our on-site eatery, The Palm House .
- Christmas gift ideas at The Packhouse
There can be any number of reasons why shopping for gifts at this time of year isn’t always the joyful experience it should be. Some people seem to have very little in the way of real interests or passions, making it tricky to know where even to start. Others are just notoriously hard to please. (We all know someone like that …) Sometimes, there are just too many people to buy for, or you’re too busy at work and so you just run out of time. Or it may be that you’re spending Christmas with someone for the first time this year, and so don’t really know what they’d like. Equally, it could be that you’ve been given a present from someone unexpectedly, and have no idea what to get for them in return – with just a few days to decide. What’s more, if you stick to the High Street, you may struggle to find something truly original. Last year, Time Out mentioned self-help books, statement mugs and photo frames among its list of “ Awful Christmas presents no one wants to get”. To which you could probably add bath salts, socks or a new jumper. Gifts from The Pack House At The Packhouse, we’ve got Christmas all wrapped up, with an extensive line-up of delightful unique offerings, any one of which will earn you a heartfelt thank you rather than one forced through gritted teeth. What’s more, our dozens of small independent traders are based in a centuries-old former hop kiln at Runfold near Farnham, Surrey. It’s a Grade II-listed building, and one which seriously enhances the pleasure of festive shopping as a destination venue. And we reckon it beats battling your way through the crowds in department stores and High Streets every time! What’s in our festive shop? There are so many fantastic gifts on offer in our online seasonal shop, including: · Celebratory hampers: We have a number of these amazing gift baskets all year round , but our Christmas hampers are something else! Costing just £95, they contain nothing but pure decadent indulgence, from pomegranate-scented candles and reed diffusers and hand cream to sweets and the dreamy treat of prosecco-flavoured milk chocolate. Not a sock or bath salt in sight! Equally crucially, there’s nothing ‘essential’ or ‘useful’ – the focus is on luxury and feeling pampered. Our hampers are not about things you ‘need’. · Hand-poured luxury candles: Again, this is all about thoroughly spoiling your recipient, with candles emitting delectable aromas from peony and pomegranate to lemongrass and verbena. Meanwhile, for more seasonal scents, our UK-made Christmas candle creates cosy Christmas moments, whether you’re just snuggling up at home or entertaining dinner guests. · Check out The Packhouse larder where, yet again, it’s all about decadence and not counting the calories – think luxury fudge, chocolate, biscuits, clotted-cream fudge and shortbread. Even our boiled sweets are a little bit cheeky, in flavours including gin-and-tonic, espresso martini and strawberry daiquiri. Equally, we make web-based ordering very easy. But if you’re able to visit us in person, you’ll find ample free parking plus plentiful inspiration, whatever you’re looking for. The place is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of goodies! Still not completed your festive decorations? Don’t worry; we can help, with beautiful baubles, table pieces, external décor and more – none of which you’ll find anywhere else. Meanwhile, we’ve turned our space into a Christmas wonderland, creating an exquisite atmosphere that heightens the seasonal shopping experience. And each stall is a treasure trove, so anyone hunting that elusive perfect gift may well find it among the vintage homeware, furniture and more on offer here. There’s always soothing new to discover; plus we’re open seven days a week between 10am and 5.30pm. Finally, combine with a visit to delightful our Palm House eatery for a complete festive experience. Contact us if you'd like to find out more about the gifts we have in-store.
- Upcycling tips: breathing new life into vintage pieces
Upcycling, also sometimes called creative reuse, is all about taking something no longer in use, either because it’s old or discarded, and transforming it into something with a greater value and giving it a second life. And it’s a pretty popular thing to do with, according to Google Trends, a 277% rise in online interest around the search term “furniture upcycling near me” in the UK just a couple of years ago. And, as reported by Insight DIY, well over a third (39%) of Brits are already upcycling more – with furniture items being the project of choice. That’s hardly surprising when you consider the benefits of this activity – and the environmental advantages of keeping things out of landfill. Meanwhile, many love the creative aspect and the associated mental health benefits, plus the chance to support local small businesses. And there are so many forms upcycling can take, from using an empty tin as a plant pot to personalising an old piece of clothing, recovering a worn lampshade or creating outdoor furniture from old pallets. You just need a dash of imagination, some time to commit to your project and the desire for a little craftmanship. Things to consider when taking on an upcycling project: Prepare: As with anything else, preparation is key. Have everything you need together in one place, thoroughly clean the item to be upcycled and check it over for any imperfections. It’s usually possible to fill in scratches and holes with wood filler. Mistakes happen: Even experienced upcyclers make errors from time to time. The good news is that there are few mistakes that can’t be put right. So don’t beat yourself up over mishaps. Trial and error: If you can, trial a project using a similar item to the one you really want to transform, a piece you’re less bothered about – and see whether your idea works, with minimal risk. Mix and match: Whether you’re working with fabrics and textiles or anything else, don’t be afraid to mix things up and try different blends of materials. Sand it down: If you’re repainting a pre-loved item of furniture, sand it down before you do anything else. This will make a big difference to the end result, and so it is worth the additional effort. Enjoy: Have fun – after all, that’s what upcycling is about more than anything else. Don’t worry if what you end up with isn’t quite how you initially imagined it. The mere fact that you have done the job yourself is reason enough to be proud. Indulge your passion for upcycling at The Packhouse The Packhouse is a Grade-II listed structure which spreads itself across several floors of a centuries-old former hop kiln at Runfold near Farnham, Surrey. Dozens of traders take up the upper floors of the building, offering treasure troves of gifts , furniture , jewellery, homeware and more. Here you’ll find many upcycled and lovingly restored items, plenty of inspiration for your own projects, plus items you can take and make your own, in a huge range of colours, textures and materials. And you’ll also be doing your bit to support local independent traders and the environment. Learn more today about Packhouse – start planning your project or come down to our store .
- Get your Christmas shopping done early at one of our late-night festive shopping events
With Christmas fast approaching, our thoughts are starting to turn towards preparing for the festive season. And if it falls to you to host this year, or you have a lot of people to buy for, it can quickly start to feel overwhelming – with shopping, cooking, cards, decorations and more all to be sorted out. And, if you have young children in your household, you’re likely to be particularly busy. We’ve all got that one person in our lives who is tricky to please, or someone for whom we have no idea what to buy. But it can help if, rather than traipsing round the High Street yet again, you set your sights on something a little more original. Equally, it’s a good idea to get cracking on your gift list as soon as you can. At The Packhouse, we love Christmas while fully appreciating the challenges this time of year can bring. That’s why we run our highly popular festive late-night events at our premises near Runfold, Farnham, where you can make a night out of your seasonal shopping and make an excellent start on that present list before December even kicks in. Pick up things you won’t find anywhere else which will delight even the fussiest recipient, and knock the socks off – well, the standard gifts like socks or aftershave. This year, these occasions take place over three Thursday evenings – on the 14th, 21st and 28th November, between 6pm and 9pm. Come with friends and turn it into a pre-Christmas social meet-up ahead of the December whirlwind – after all, it may be the only time you can all get together! Enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco and perhaps a mince pie at our Coffee House . You could also celebrate the season and a successful shopping trip by decamping to our on-site eatery, The Palm House restaurant, to sample its festive tapas menu as part of a relaxed evening in a magical ambience. The good news is that customers who share cars, arrive by cab or are dropped off can book walk-in tickets free of charge. Meanwhile, you can book a space in our car park for just £5. Spaces are limited, so we ask every vehicle arriving to have a booking, plus we encourage carpooling where possible. What’s more, all profits go to support the vital work of our local hospice, Phyllis Tuckwell . Our festive shopping evenings are in fact proving so popular that, at the moment, parking for all three events is fully booked. However, it’s worth checking back with us over the next few weeks in case of any cancellations. Plus you can still reserve walk-in tickets for all three dates. At The Packhouse, we’re home to dozens of independent traders (more than 60 in all) spread over the upper floors of a former hop kiln that’s some four centuries old and a Grade II-listed building, making it very much a destination venue. So if you’re stuck for inspiration this festive season, one of our stores is bound to have that elusive, perfect present, whether you’re after a gift in jewellery or homeware, among myriad other treasures. We also have some unique Christmas decorations you’re bound to love. Prefer to shop from home? - Sustainable shopping: how The Packhouse supports eco-friendly living
At The Packhouse, Farnham, we offer a unique shopping experience with more than 60 small independent traders in a delightful setting. Each trader has their own style and inspiration, but what you’ll find here is a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind pieces across vintage homeware , gifts , jewellery, furniture , soft furnishings and more. Plus it’s all set against the backdrop of an old hop kiln that’s four centuries old and a Grade II-listed structure. So it’s a one-off shopping experience, which you could combine with popping into our on-site eatery, The Palm House . (Alternatively, just grab a coffee and sit in one of our garden pods and enjoy the benefits of the outside world from under cover.) What makes us sustainable? We know that sustainability really matters to our customers, as it does to the population more widely. A report from Nielsen IQ published in Retail Times, for example, found that more than half (55%) of UK consumers say they aim to make sustainable choices wherever possible. Meanwhile, nearly a fifth (18%) claim that sustainability is key to their everyday lives. There are a number of reasons why coming to The Packhouse is an eco-friendly choice: 1.) Buy vintage and cut out waste These days, goods are often made and bought at lightning speed. (And frequently tossed away again just as quickly.) But vintage and second-hand items provide a viable alternative that slows down the buying process and is gentle on the planet. Shop this way and you give pieces a second life – or perhaps even a third or fourth one. Otherwise, they could easily end up in landfill. And when you consider all the steps involved in making something new, from producing the materials to manufacturing and delivery, you can see how much all this adds to the producer’s carbon footprint. Buying vintage cuts out these stages, so ultimately can make a significant difference. Some modern production also involves potentially toxic chemicals, plus extensive use of water. Again, with vintage purchases you sidestep these issues. And not only that but you’ll end up with unique pieces which have their own character and tell their own story, helping you to create a style and look that’s uniquely yours. That’s particularly the case if you then decide to repurpose or upcycle the item yourself to make it your own. 2.) Local traders Our traders are small, independent operators who are for the most part based near us, so by shopping with us you’ll be supporting them. Not only does that guarantee the uniqueness and exclusivity of your purchases, but their carbon footprint is smaller than that of the big chain stores. Some of our independent traders , for example, also offer high-quality perishable goods such as locally produced honey. Equally, when you shop with us online our products in our Packhouse Larder include treats like fizzed wine-flavoured boiled sweets or tangy Seville orange marmalade which are suitable for vegans and vegetarians. So as well as being delicious, these are an environmentally friendly choice. Finally, our team are always happy to chat to people about how their goods have been sourced. Do your bit to be sustainable You can do your bit for sustainable shopping, too. For example, while we have ample free parking, we encourage car sharing where possible. Plus we are just a short walk from Runfold, which is served by buses. Finally, don’t forget to bring your reusable shopping bags with you!
